So today I read Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J Maas, it’s a compilation of the prequel novellas Maas has written for the Throne of Glass series.
The stories follow the character of Celaena Sardothien, an assassin, as she battles, finds love and is sent into slavery. ToG is an amazing series and these novellas did not disappoint.
One of the main things we get insight into within the novellas is Celaena’s relationship with Sam, Arobynn and Ansel, among others. Which is particularly heartbreaking in the case of Sam as we know from book 1 of Throne of Glass that Sam is dead, so I felt as if I were reading and just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I loved Sam and Celaena, way more than I thought I would. Though I didn’t like Celaena as much in the novellas as a character – presumably because she’s younger and more self-absorbed…either way, I didn’t enjoy her as a character quite as much in the novellas.
However, the writing was superb and it was interesting to read the things that are occasionally referenced (and majorly so in the last book) and understand them better.
Have you read the Throne of Glass series or Assassin’s Blade? Tell me what you thought in the comments!
Well, I’m off to re-read ToG, book of the month: Assassin’s Blade
