I recently browsed through Netgalley and came across a book called ‘Ensnared’ that’s described as a futuristic retelling of Beauty and the Beast. While it wasn’t bad, it was definitely bizarre.
The main character is called Alainn, to save her father from prison she swaps places with his robotic invention to live with Lorccan. Lorccan buys AI and lives in a completely AI based house. Predictably, he and Alainn fall in love, with him none the wiser to her being human and then some evil AI tries to kill them both.
Mostly I found this book predictable and just bizarre. The writing itself was okay, though a little jumpy and unclear in places. Pretty much all of the characters had some bog-standard tragic backstory which was really cliched and Lorccan seemed only a little less crazy than his parents to me.
I thought there was going to be some big over arching plot when Rosebud kept saying Alainn had to save Lorccan. Turns out she only meant from his dreams or something, unless she somehow knew about Rose, I guess but even so – that was disappointing.
I honestly wouldn’t consider this a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Yes he had some scars, and yes she is supposedly pretty but honestly aside from that and having a crappy dad, that’s where the similarities end.
Overall I wasn’t expecting a great deal from this book, so in that it surpassed my expectations – but it was a 7/10 at best.
